Managing severe anxiety with traditional medicine (not Traditional Chinese Medicine!) often involves therapy and even prescription narcotics! For those of us who are weary of such extreme tactics, the newest research around acupuncture and anxiety is especially exciting.
Using functional MRI’s, researchers have been measuring brain activity to see changes that occur in the brain during acupuncture for patients with high anxiety. They have found that acupuncture “down regulates” the sympathetic nervous system, or the “fight/flight” reaction, and turns on the parasympathetic nervous system or the “rest and digest” reaction. When you down regulate the nervous system and the heart rate slows down, muscles relax, and blood flow returns to your organ systems.
With or without anxiety, almost everyone feels more calm after acupuncture, and many clients even report feeling “buzzed” after treatment. Contact us to make your appointment today and see how we can help you!
